Best Weber Accessory for Juicy Chicken
Wow, if you are planning to grill/smoke chicken thighs, wings, or really any cuts of chicken, get this now! You will not be disappointed!I am the type of person who spends way too much time researching products and alternative options before pulling the trigger on a purchase. I did the same for this Weber accessory. The original cone-like accessory on which this product is based is the Vortex. The Vortex is essentially a piece of sheet metal (i believe stainless steel) that is bent into a circular or conical shape, and then it is spot welded together. It's nothing fancy or complicated to manufacture, but it absolutely gets the job done, and so there are a number of "knockoff" Vortexes such as this "Whirlpool" from QuliMetal. With all that said, if you want to pay closer to $40-45, get the original Vortex. If you'd prefer to save about $15, get this Whirlpool.I decided to cook chicken thighs for my first cook with this accessory. A few weeks prior, I had cooked some chicken thighs without this accessory. While the thighs turned out pretty tasty, I was not able to get crispy skin because temperatures were not high enough. The skin was slightly rubbery or chewy. However, with this Whirlpool accessory, the grill was able to reach super high temperatures, and once the lid is on, convection currents take over so that the entire volume within the kettle can reach higher temperatures. With the lid on, the lid thermometer exceeded the max temperature reading which I think is 600 or 700 F. Before throwing the chicken thighs on the grill, I had set up my temperature probes at either side of the diameter of the grill, and the probes read 400-425 F consistently. I then threw the chicken thighs on the grill, and I was careful to place them around the outer circumference of the grill grate. Further from the center of the grill (where the Whirlpool is) allows for indirect cooking and prevents drying out the meat. Less than 1 hour later, probably closer to 40-45 minutes, the chicken thighs had reached internal temps of 180-190F. I pulled them from the grill and immediately knew these would taste amazing. They had juices and rendered fat and collagen practically bursting out of the chicken when I would poke the chicken with a fork to pull them from the grill. After a short rest of 10-15 minutes while I cleaned up some things, I ate my dinner. Wow, I don't know if I've had better chicken thighs than these! The skin on the outside was crispy, the meat had picked up some smoky flavor from the cherry wood chunks I had placed above the Whirlpool on the grill grate, and the inside of the meat was super juicy.Next up, I plan on doing chicken wings and hope to get them to a similar crunchy texture. Also, I can't wait to cook steaks and use this accessory to sear the steaks at 600-800 F.One thing to note -- I will probably have to buy a grill grate with a removable center insert. The temperature coming from the Whirlpool is so hot that I think it will burn through the standard grill grate and cause it to degrade pretty quickly. Keep that in mind if you plan on getting this product--you don't want to have any metal grate directly over the Whirlpool unless the grate will only be exposed to the high temperature for a short amount of time, such as when searing a steak.

Works as advertised.
Works like a charm. Really hot in the middle and less heat around the edges. Seems to be sturdy. Have only used it twice and look forward to years of good service.

Great product!
The overall build of it is high quality. This particular unit I bought for my Char-Griller® AKORN® Kamado Charcoal Grill and Smoker. Outstanding results for chicken wings and to heat up a ceramic pizza stone in the same day.

Works for the Weber Summit kamado
If you have a charcoal grill you have to get a vortex ring. This simple device turns your grill into a smoky, delicious convection oven. I have a Weber Summit kamado and this ring works great with the charcoal grate in the high position. My lid temperature gauge got to 500F and cooked a batch of chicken wings perfectly. This is the only way to cook chicken pieces on a grill. Thighs and legs come off the grill crispy without being burnt. Before I got my Weber, I had a homemade vortex ring but this is definitely better than trying to make your own. Get a ring and get creative. There are so many ways to use this simple accessory.
